Why Holy Cross Lutheran Preschool?

We offer a safe and nurturing environment where children can interact with other's beyond their
immediate family and the world around them in exciting ways. Activities include listening skills, circle time, interactive play, basic conversation skills, and field trip experiences beyond the classroom.
Spiritual
Children participate in weekly chapel services, learning simple prayers, songs, bible stories and modeling Christian behavior.
Physical
Daily children participate in large and small muscle development activities. Themes include healthy foods and dental care. Development of coordination and balance. Daily art activities and writing enhance fine motor skills.
Language and Vocabulary
Children's vocabularies grow through singing, word play, story time and exploration activities as well as conversations with peers in dramatic play and around the table at snack and lunch time.
Literacy and Math Skills
Alphabet sense, colors, shapes, number skills, and reading readiness
are developed through themed studies on age-appropriate topics. We help develop foundational learning skills, that prepare children for transition to Kindergarten.
Problem Solving
Children are naturally curious about the world around them. We encourage children to explore, and ask questions. We encourage children to make choices and develop autonomy.
Science and Social Studies
Children love to make discoveries and are eager to share their excitement with others. We offer activities that encourage children to explore their senses, test their ideas, and learn about topics beyond the classroom walls.

A diamond has many facets – and so do the 75 years of Holy Cross Lutheran Church. From the beginning of the church as a mission congregation to today, we have shone in the West Park area. Beginning with services in Huntley Hardware, moving on to a building that was once West Park Animal Hospital and then to our current location on Rocky River Drive, complete with a school, pre-school and extra classroom space in a modular unit. We have been blessed with pastors and leaders who have led us to use our resources to spread the Word.
The first 25 years: 1944-1969
Holy Cross began as a mission congregation of Unity Lutheran Church in December,1944. The current sanctuary was built in 1958. We added the Educational-Fellowship Hall, in 1964. The Holy Cross annex, now the pre-school began as a parsonage. Pastor McRee, Pastor Majoros, Pastor Dechow, and Pastor Pelikan lived there during their respective pastorates at Holy Cross. For several years the parsonage was used as a Group Home residence for Bethesda
The second 25 years: 1969-1994
During these years Holy Cross became one of four congregations who started West Park Lutheran School. Paul Hink was the first principal followed by Glenn Kloha, Nancy Clark, and now Reverend Michael Scheer.
These last 25 years: 1994-2019
West Park Lutheran School is now Holy Cross Lutheran School and has added additional classrooms in the form of a modular unit at the back of the E-F Hall. Another facet of the church was added in the form of the Heavenly Harvest Food Pantry. Food is distributed to those in need on the first Saturday of each month. Currently we are serving up to 50 families per month.
The Next 25 years: 2019-2044
What will happen before we reach the century mark? Be a part of Holy Cross’ history -volunteer to spread our mission through words and actions. Let’s continue what God has led us to do.
